The Ripatransone Cathedral was commissioned in 1597 by Bishop Pompeo de Nobili on the site of the ancient church of San Gregorio Magno, designed by Gaspare Guerra of Modena. The building, with three naves in a Latin cross plan, was completed in its current form between the 17th and 19th centuries. The brick façade, designed by architect Giuseppe Rossetti in the 19th century, is solemn and balanced, while the neo-Gothic bell tower (1902) rises almost 50 metres and is crowned by the statue of the Redeemer. Inside, you can admire the decorations by the Bedini brothers (1960), 17th-century paintings by Orazio Gentileschi, Giovanni Lanfranco and Alessandro Turchi, and a wooden crucifix that tradition attributes to a gift from Pope Saint Pius V. From the left transept, you enter the diocesan sanctuary of the Madonna di San Giovanni, with the miraculous statue of the Madonna of Loreto sculpted by Sebastiano Sebastiani in 1620. The crypt houses the church of San Giovanni Decollato, home of the Confraternity of Mercy and Death, which houses the statues of Our Lady of Sorrows and the Dead Christ.
