When Pope Pius V established the diocese of Ripatransone in 1571, the first cathedral chosen was the parish church of San Benigno, now disappeared. Only the bell tower remains of the Gothic building, rebuilt in the late 19th century and never completed. The bell tower, which stands alone along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, is one of the most evocative testimonies of the city's first cathedral, later deemed inadequate and replaced by the new Duomo commissioned by Bishop Pompeo De Nobili. This solitary architectural remnant preserves the memory of the diocese's origins and the profound connection between Ripatransone and its religious history.
